Do Celebrity Endorsements Have “Star” Power?
The public’s voice is loudly heard during national elections. It is the time when everyone is in equal footing with a single vote in choosing the right candidates who should run the government. Whether you are rich or poor, it doesn’t really matter. You only have one ballot that you need to fill out: nothing more, nothing less.
Many times we hear stories of gimmickry and some popularity endorsements involving people in showbiz industry during electoral campaigns and other forums. Do they really help in swaying the people’s choice of who they should vote for? Or are they simply for aesthetics purposes making the selection process among political contenders entertaining? Does their presence have an impact at all?
Certainly, credibility of the celebrities who endorse a candidate is at stake. However, the candidate’s popularity in terms of his appeal and performance matters. A politician should have a clear platform to begin with as he tries to persuade the voting public to support him. Celebrities’ appeal may influence the voter’s decision but I believe the voters nowadays are becoming more intelligent in choosing the more deserving candidates.
Although celebrities’ endorsements help, the public needs to be more critical about the candidates’ contributions or platforms. Celebrities are merely for promotions and never the ones you are voting for. This should be clear to everyone.
If you made a wrong choice in selecting a candidate, don’t blame the celebrities. Blame yourself. Support the deserving candidates with good qualifications and not merely because you like the celebrities endorsing them.
The reminder “vote wisely” is not just an adage. It is a strong appeal to the voters to cautiously think of who you should select in the elections. Never be blinded by simple popularity and gimmicky. In the long-run, it is you who will benefit from the projects of the candidates who will win. Think of your future as citizens of your country. Always remember that an election is not a joke. It is a national event that needs to be pondered on.
